Mountains in the World


A mountain is a large landform that stretches at least 600 meter high from earth surface.

Fold Mountains are the youngest mountains in the world. Fold Mountains occur when two plates collide.

Himalayas, Andes and Rocky Mountains are examples of Fold Mountains.

Himalayas is the highest mountain in the world.

The Andes is the lengthiest continental mountain range in the world. Andes is located in South America.

Orology is the study of Mountain research.

Speleology is the study of Caves.

Ural Mountains are located in the boundary of Asia and Europe.

The Alps in Europe is famous for Tourist Destination.

The Carpathian Mountains is famous for its mention in Bram Stoker’s novel “Dracula”.

Carpathian Mountains are located in Eastern Europe and have a length of 1500 kilometer.

Carpathian Mountains share boundary with the countries,

Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine and Romania.

Atlas is the mountain range of Africa. The boundary countries with this 2400 kilometer long Atlas Mountain is Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

The Caucasus Mountains spreads through the continents Asia and Europe.

Appalachian and Rocky mountain ranges are located in North America.

Mount Fuji is located in Honshu Island of Japan.

Table Mountain is located at Cape Town of South Africa.

Adam’s peak in Sri lanka is considered as a devoted hill by the religions,

Buddha, Hindu, Muslim and Christians.

Tenzing is the first Indian to climb the Mount Everest. The first Indian woman to climb Mount Everest is Bachendri Pal and it was in May 17, 1984.

 Santhosh Yadav is the first woman to climb Mount Everest twice in less than a year (1992 - 1993). It was in 2003, the silver jubilee (50 years) of climbing the Mount Everest is celebrated.

Mount Kailash is located in China (Tibet), which have an altitude of 6714 meters. The name of Kailash in Tibet is Kang Rimpoche.

The Kangchenjunga Mountain is located in Sikkim. The altitude of Kangchenjunga is about 8586 meter. Kangchenjunga is the third highest peak in the world. Also it is the second highest peak in India.

The meaning of Nanga Parbat is Naked Mountain. Nanga Parbat is also called as Diamir. The meaning of Diamer is “the king of mountains”.

The highest peak in Europe is Mount Elbrus in Caucasus Mountains (Russia). The height of Mount Elbrus is 5642 meter.

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa. The highest part of Kilimanjaro is Kibo Hut with 5895 meter altitude. Snows of Kilimanjaro, which is a popular short story written by Ernest Hemingway.

The highest peak of North America, Mount McKinley is located in Alaska. The regional name of Mount McKinley is Denali. The altitude of Denali is 6194 meter.

The highest peak of South America, Aconcagua is located in Argentina. Aconcagua is located in Andes mountain range. The height of Aconcagua is 6959 meter. It is the highest peak in southern hemisphere of Earth and also the largest peak outside Asia.

Mount Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia. The height of Kosciuszko is 2228 meter and is located in snowy mountain range.

Vinson Massif is the highest mountain in Antarctica Continent. The highest peak in Massif is Mount Craddock (4650 meter).

The Vindhya Range splits the Indian Peninsula into two as Northern India and Southern India. Satpura in Madhya Pradesh is the parallel range of Vindhya. The Narmada River flows in between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges.

Khasi Hills is located in Meghalaya. Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are the place where highest rainfall in the world occurs is also located in Khasi Hills.

The capital of Meghalaya, Shillong is located in Garo Hills.

Lushai Hills are located in Mizoram.

Arakan Yoma hills are located at Myanmar.

Mount Harriet is located at Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The Khyber Pass is a mountain pass connecting Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Palakkad gap is wide low mountain pass in the Western Ghats. It acts as a passage between the Palakkad District of Kerala with Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu.

Bolan Pass in Toba Kakar Range of Pakistan is considered as the gateway to India.

The 7134 meter length Lenin Peak is located between the mountains of Pamir. This peak is a boundary to both countries, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The base-to-peak height of Mauna Kea is 10,203 meter. But its height above sea level is 4208 meter.

Mount Chimborazo is the mountain range that located far away from centre of Earth. It is located in South America.

Chimborazo is located in Ecuador.

Mount Abu is located in the Aravalli Range of Sirohi district of Rajasthan. Guru Shikhar is the highest peak at Abu Range with 1,722 meter. The only hill station in Rajasthan is Mount Abu.

The famous temple complex, Dilwara Temples is located in Mount Abu. Mount Abu is also the site of the headquarters of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University.

The Anamudi peak in Munnar taluk of Idukki district is the highest peak in South India with 2695 meter height. Anamudi is located in Western Ghats.

The biggest peak in the Solar System is Mount Olympus (Olympus Mons), located in Mars. The height of Olympus Mons is about 27 kilometers.
