Government Law College in Barton Hill Trivandrum

The establishment for Legal schooling was laid in the ancient Travancore state by the H H Ayillyam Thirunal in 1874, the then King of Travancore. In 1875, a Law school was established near to HH the Maharaja’s college, Trivandrum with 46 students. From 1894, a detached institution named Maharaja’s Law College was established and the 3 year BL course was modernized in 1902. In 1926, Mr. E.J. John became the 1st Indian Principal for this college. From 1931 onwards, the college was changed into a full-time institute and was affiliated to Travancore University (present Kerala University) in 1938. But this college was moved to Ernakulam in 1949, later came back to Trivandrum in 1954. But after the change of Travancore University to Kerala University in 1956, the management of college was taken by the kerala government. However the three year LLB course was started in the year 1967 and the evening college for LLB students was started in the academic year 1974-1975. The Centenary festival was launched by Sri Fakrudeen Ali Ahamed, the then President of India in 1974. A latest survey conducted by India Today, a popular Indian magazine, listed the college in 23rd place among the best law colleges in India. They are also conducting programs such as tech fest, Sports, Cultural Activities and other fests.  Special classes for Spoken English, training in Group Discussions, Personal Interview and Personality development classes are conducted regularly. This college includes separate Hostel for both girls and boys. Some of anti activities such as Ragging, Strikes and Harthals are restricted inside the campus. Rules and regulations are also strict.
